1966 Triumph Bonneville T120R

From the Zimmerman Brothers Collection
Bill Hoard restoration

Bill Hoard of Martin, Michigan, the restorer of many Bonnevilles in the Zimmerman Brothers Collection, is considered one of the best in the world. Hoard’s work is featured in many Triumph collections in the USA. Most collectors say he set the Triumph restoration standards for more than 25 years. Bill has recently retired, and this may be the rare chance to acquire one of his restorations. With the release of the new 1966 Bonneville T120 650, Triumph needed to show it could squeeze more power from its 650, which is what worldwide buyers were demanding. Things were heating up now, with the trickle of small-displacement bikes from Japan starting to turn into a flood of larger, more powerful machines. For Triumph motorcycles (and the Triumph Bonneville in particular) to maintain its position as one of the fastest production bikes in the world, serious work would need to be done. A new lighter crankshaft with new main bearings, oiling system, cams, double valve springs and a 9:1 compression ratio helped its cause. The steering angle was brought from 65 degrees to 62 degrees to improve high-speed handling, and new wider surface brakes were installed. The new teardrop-shaped fuel tank and “eyebrow” emblem became the symbol of Triumph motorcycles.
